school shooting today, and unfortunately perished soon after she was discovered in a school hallway. Officials described Amanda Collette as “unresponsive” when discovered in the hallway.
Amanda Collette was a sophomore at Dillard High School up until this tragic incident today. A school official discovered Amanda Collette in the hallway of her high school. The official, a resource officer, came across Amanda’s body sometime around 11 a.m. Amanda was later confirmed to be dead.
Police may already have a suspect in Amanda Collette’s murder. An unidentified 15 year old girl, believed to be a student at Dillard High School, was retained for questioning by authorities.
Police are rather baffled as to how Amanda Collette may have been killed. No staff members nor students at Dillard High School reported hearing gunshots or other strange noises. The girl’s body also failed to furnish any evidence as to what may have caused her death. Although some media outlets are reporting that Amanda Collette was indeed shot, it is not clear at this time whether these reports are accurate.
Update: Fort Lauderdale police officials have confirmed that Amanda Collette was killed by a gunshot. They believe the shooter, who has yet to be identified, used a small caliber gun to commit the murder. The incident is believed to have only involved one female student from the school.
A sophomore at the school alleges that he saw the conflict unfold. Stephan Willis claims he was watching two girls in the hallway, one of them being Amanda Collette, arguing in the hallway. The other unidentified female allegedly furnished a gun and proceeded to shoot her classmate. Willis had known the victim since primary school.
Amanda Collette’s alleged killer was apprehended by police at a local restaurant. The police were able to retrieve the weapon used in the killing.
Although Dillard High School was placed in a lockdown state shortly following the shooting, it has since resumed its regular glass schedule. Dillard High School currently boasts a student body of some 1,700 students. The campus is guarded by security staff and is also monitored by security cameras.
This is indeed a sad story and our hearts go out to the Collette family. We can only hope that this situation increases security oversight in schools. We will be watching this story as more details unfold.
UPDATE: The unidentified girl police apprehended at a local restaurant was charged with Amanda Collette’s murder. Teah Wimberly, a student at the school, was charged with first degree murder and discharging a weapon on school grounds. Teah Wimberly is said to be cooperating with investigators.
When police arrested Wimberly at the restaurant, thanks to the help of a concerned local resident, she was found in possession of a firearm. Investigators believe that the shooting stemmed from a conflict between the two students.
A sophomore student at the school claims that Amanda Collette was attempting to purchase something from a vending machine when she was shot by Wimberly. Wimberly was said to like Collette, however Collette allegedly didn’t want to associate with the fellow classmate.
After found in the hallway, Amanda Collette was taken to nearby Broward General Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the center.
Despite earlier reports, Devondrius Brown, a Dillard High School student, claims to have heard gunshots shortly before Collette collapsed. Brown was in a classroom within close proximity to the vending machines.
